No Postmortem for the Absurd

On 16 August 1858, Queen Victoria’s ninety-eight-word telegram to James Buchanan took almost sixteen hours to cross the Atlantic, through three thousand kilometers of copper wrapped in gutta-percha and tarred hemp, five-eighths of an inch thick. Within a few weeks the line was dead. Edward Whitehouse, the engineer running the cable’s eastern terminus, believed a fading signal called for more force, and pushed as much as 2,000 volts through the line trying to boost it. His counterpart at the western end, William Thomson, later Lord Kelvin, took the opposite approach. Rather than overpower the cable, he built a mirror galvanometer sensitive enough to register the faint signal that was already arriving, intact, if you had an instrument delicate enough to notice it. The line kept degrading under Whitehouse’s voltage until transmission stopped for good. The commission investigating the failure blamed him for it.

That verdict held for over a century, until the historian Donard de Cogan examined a retrieved length of the actual cable in 1985 and found the copper core off-center, in places nearly touching the outer iron sheathing, the insulation already deteriorated in ways that likely predated whatever current Whitehouse ran through it. Bad manufacture and a bad winter in storage may have doomed the line regardless of which engineer was right about voltage. De Cogan added an uncomfortable footnote to his own finding: having a scapegoat probably helped the project’s backers try again, and a second cable succeeded eight years later. The wrong diagnosis, delivered with confidence, may have done more for the field than an honest “we may never know” would have. Before any of this was settled, the cable did real work: 732 messages sent in a few weeks, including one order that held two regiments back from India and saved the British treasury an estimated £50,000, about a seventh of the whole project’s cost, recouped by a single telegram before the insulation gave out.

Seventy years later and an ocean away, Albert Camus described a structurally similar problem with no equivalent retrieval available. He called it the absurd: the gap between a mind that wants reason and clarity from existence, and a universe that offers neither. Camus catalogued the standard responses to that gap (hedonism, religious faith, despair, suicide) and rejected all of them on the same grounds. Each one closes the gap by force. Faith manufactures a certainty the world never actually supplied. Suicide removes the mind that noticed the certainty was missing. Despair treats the absence as already decisive, which is its own kind of manufactured resolution. All three are Whitehouse’s move, run on a psychological line instead of a copper one: push more current through a channel not rated to carry it, and count the resulting damage as an answer.

What Camus proposed instead reads like the mirror galvanometer. Don’t manufacture a signal the world isn’t sending. Build the capacity to register exactly how faint the real one is, and keep functioning inside that limit without pretending it’s stronger than it is. He called it lucid revolt: living at full intensity while declining to resolve the contradiction, the “happy Sisyphus” who keeps pushing the boulder with no expectation that the labor stops being absurd. Thomson’s instrument took the same discipline. A galvanometer sensitive enough to read a signal nobody else could detect still refuses the one response, more voltage, that would have killed the cable faster. Revolt, in Camus’s terms, is a commitment to sensitivity over voltage: the willingness to build a receiver adequate to what’s actually arriving, instead of demanding that what’s arriving answer to a receiver built for something louder.

But the parallel is not symmetrical. Whitehouse eventually got his postmortem. A piece of the actual cable, pulled up and examined more than a century later, told de Cogan something close to the truth: this line was possibly unsalvageable no matter who was at the switch. There is no equivalent artifact for the absurd. Nobody dredges up a length of a life and finds out, after the fact, whether the contradiction it ran on was survivable with a more patient instrument, or whether it was always going to fail regardless of which response anyone chose. Camus’s argument was never that lucid revolt outperforms despair on some scoreboard neither of them can see. It was narrower than that: revolt is the response that doesn’t cook the insulation while you wait for a verdict that, unlike Whitehouse’s, is never coming. The 1858 engineers eventually got a board of inquiry, a retrieved sample, and a named cause, however imperfect. Camus’s absurd offers none of that apparatus — no cable to dredge, no de Cogan a century later to say which strategy the universe would have rewarded, had it been the kind of thing that rewards strategies at all. What both cases share, in the end, isn’t a lesson about which choice is right. It’s the plainer fact that the choice has to be made before the diagnosis exists, by an engineer or a person, working a line whose true condition nobody standing at either end can actually see.

There is still one working test, short of a postmortem. A mirror galvanometer can register a signal too faint to send as text but too present to call the line dead, and Thomson used exactly that gradient to justify sensitivity over voltage while the cable was still under debate, not after the fact. The equivalent check for the absurd would be whether the gap between wanting clarity and getting none is still producing anything at all: a question you can still put into words, a contradiction you can still describe with some precision, a Sisyphus who can still narrate the weight of the boulder. That is not an answer, but it is not nothing either. Camus’s own account depends on it, since he grounds the absurd in the fact that only a rational mind can perceive the gap in the first place, and denying the absurd means denying the very capacity that registers it. The one condition under which the whole framework stops applying is total silence, the kind no instrument, however sensitive, recovers a trace from. Camus’s revolt, like Thomson’s galvanometer, presupposes a line still carrying something to read. Neither of them has a term for whatever comes after that.
